What Are The Different Types Of Double End Bags?

Before we start to learn about the best double end bags, let’s make sure we are on the same page about the products. As it stands, there are two distinct models that are used for the bags: single bag and Mexican.

Single Bag

The single bag is definitely the most common type you will see. It looks like a small ball in a tear drop shape.

Each end of the ball is connected to the floor and ceiling using two cords. These bags come in different sizes. The smaller the bag the faster it will move once you hit it, and of course smaller bags are harder to hit than big bags.

Mexican Bag

The Mexican double end bag is basically two of the single bags sewn together.

The bags are anchored on the top and bottom as well and come with the added benefit of being able to throw more types of punches at them. The larger bag size and greater weight lets you throw uppercuts without the bag zooming out of control.

List Of The Best Double End Bags

Ok, now we've taken a look at the different types of double end bags, lets take a look at some of the top models currently available and whether or not there worth an investment.

Ringside Double End Bag - Editors Choice

The Ringside Double End Bag is a quality single bag that comes in three sizes: 5”,7”, and 9”.

Each one of these bags is useful for training different aspects of your speed and skill. For a person who is just starting out, it may be useful to get the 9” bag until you develop a keen eye for the speed of the bag.

If the Ringside name sounds familiar that’s because they are a respected brand that has made a lot of different boxing gear over the years.

Ringside is one of the top names in boxing gear and for good reason. The Ringside Double End Bag is made of high quality leather, meaning that it will be able to take a beating for quite a long time.

Also, the loops on the top and the bottom of the bag that are used for anchoring feature triple reinforced stitching, so you can guarantee that the anchor points and bag will last.

Longevity is something that every company strives for, and Ringside’s unique stitching and quality materials are among the best.

Another sign of a quality company is their dedication to selling you the complete product. Included with the purchase of the Ringside Double End Bag are the two cables that you need to set up the bag. Not only does this let you get into your training quicker, but you can be assured that the materials are high quality as well.

All things considered, the moderate price point and high quality construction of this bag are great, and you will have a hard time finding a better value.

RDX Double End Bag - Best Double End Bag For Beginners

The RDX Double End Bag is another one of the best double end bags on the market today because it’s made from top quality materials and comes with a great value.

This is a single bag design that has a diameter of 7” and has a familiar tear drop shape. The 7” diameter is good for beginners or more experienced people because it is somewhat wide but still moves quickly.

The primary material used for the RDX Double End Bag is Maya hide leather, a synthetic form of leather that is renowned for its durability. Maya hide leather is very similar to real leather. However, since it is synthetic, it allows for the company to maintain a moderate price point while keeping a high quality.

You can obtain this bag in two colors, white and yellow. The RDX bag comes with a nylon strap that is used to mount the bag on both ends. The toughness of this strap makes it resistant to wear.

The bag is mounted using rubber bungee cords that are also included with the bag and come with the ability to center the bag no matter what direction you strike it from.

Cleto Reyes Double End Bag

The Cleto Reyes Double End Bag is the product of a world-renowned manufacturer of boxing equipment and many people know their gloves for being used in World Championship level boxing.

While the name might speak for itself, we still have to look at the specifics behind this bag.

Alright, the bag is available in a pure red scheme and a red and white color scheme, so you have a little bit of choice there.

The dimensions on the model are 7”x11”, so it is a moderately sized bag. This is important because 7” is small enough for some fast-paced training but still large enough to hit with small gloves or barehanded.

The bag is designed to be lightweight, so when you land a hit, the bag is going to spring back very quickly. This is designed to help develop your reflexes, so you can land a quick and effective attack.

While you may want to just take the Cleto Reyes name as evidence that they have one of the best double end bags, you should still consider some of the specs

The bag comes with two rubber double end bag cables fit through the nylon mounts. These are high quality parts, for sure, and you can expect them to last through many, many training sessions.

The only drawback is that the company expects you to have the S rings for the mounting to the ceiling or the floor. Aside from that little caveat, this bag is high quality and has a moderate to high price point attached to it.

Title Mexican Style Double End Bag

The Title Mexican Style Double End Bag is another one of the best double end bags that you can hope to find on the market today. As we mentioned in the beginning of the review, the Mexican style bags are two globes that are fused in the middle.

The entire Title Mexican Style Double End Bag is stitched with genuine leather, meaning that the body of the bag is tough and durable.

It is designed to take hits all day and night without showing signs of wear and tear.

The hooks on the top and bottom of the bag are triple reinforced with nylon in the design to provide extra longevity for the products.

The rubber bungee cable can be hooked up to both the floor and ceiling attachments that are included with the Title Mexican Style Double End Bag.

These cables provide a good amount of recoil when struck and can be adjusted in order to either increase or decrease the speed of the rebound.

The benefits of the Title Mexican Style Double End Bag are numerous. The bag is perfect for landing strikes that are part of high and low combinations that are harder to do on single bag designs.

Also, you can land heavier strikes on this bag that take longer to wind up because it does not bounce around as much as smaller bags.

Overall, this is a high quality bag that has a higher price point than many others, but when you produce such high quality of works, you are able to charge higher prices.

Cleto Reyes Double End Bag - Mexican Style

Like we said before, Cleto Reyes is a top class double end bag maker, and your expectations for their Mexican style bags should be just as high. The Mexican style bag they feature has the same color scheme available and comes in the same 7” diameter with a total length of 23”.

Much like the other Mexican style double end bags, you can throw a lot of different strikes at this bag.

It will still recoil swiftly, but it will not go nearly as fast as a single bag. Although it is a larger bag when compared with other bags of the same style, it is built to be lightweight rather than hefty.

This bag is designed to work on coordination and precision for strikers, so you know that it has to be made of some tough materials. It’s made of premium leather and a strong nylon lining that covers the entire bag.

The hooking loops at the top and bottom are made of the same durable material, so the entire bag can take a good beating.

The bag comes with two rubber cables that are hooked to the top and bottom of the bag, but the purchase does not include the swivels and mounts required. Still, the immense quality of the bag justifies a high price point, which is definitely what you can expect with this double end bag.

If you are a new fighter, you might not be willing to pay such a hefty price. Still, any good and experienced fighter knows that the best equipment requires an investment.

Title Foam Infused Double End Bag

The Title Infused Foam Double End Bag is definitely one of the best double end bags that you can expect to find. It was designed to withstand a lot of constant training without wearing down and failing.

The Title double end bag’s material is the cornerstone of the bag’s longevity. The entire outer shell is constructed with engineered leather, making it soft to strike but still strong.

All the stitching is triple nylon and heavily reinforced with welted seams and an extra level of security loops.

Perhaps the coolest part about this bag is that it is made with an impact resistant foam core. Basically, when you hit the bag, air is not escaping from the bladder of the bag because the force is being absorbed and redistributed.

The size of the bag is definitely a little on the larger side, coming in 9” and 11” bags. These are larger bags for a single double end bag, so it is good for people who are trying to gain accuracy in their strikes.

Another great thing about this bag is that it comes loaded with everything that you need to get started if your mounts are in place. You get a cable, strap, and two hangers for your floor and ceiling anchor points.

Overall, the Title Infused Foam Double is a high quality and very useful double end bag. While it is bigger than other bags, most fighters could find a use for developing heavy strikes while dodging moderately paced counter attacks.

Max MMA Double End Bag

This bag is a little bit of a change of pace but it is still a great bag to use in its own respect. This is an entire kit that is a great way for you to get started with your double end bag training regimen.

This bag comes with a door mount as well as a floor base, which is different from typical bags that have to be anchored to a fixed point in the ceiling and floor.

The Maxx MMA Double End Bag Kit is great for people who cannot change their property or risk damaging their ceilings.

It is also incredibly easy to set up; you can probably receive the package and start throwing punches in just a few minutes.

The ball is roughly 9” in diameter and is made from synthetic leather with moderately strong nylon stitching.

The ball is designed to take some punishment, but it is not going to be the strongest bag kit on the market.

The bag is designed to be a tool for punching, slipping, and counter punching, and it even comes with a pair of gloves. However, they are really not good gloves, so you should consider buying a different pair or only using them if they are the only ones you have.

Overall, this is a great bag for people who need to have something that is quickly set up and used for practice. However, this may not be the best option for serious athletes who are trying to perfect their technique while outside of the ring.

The fact is that this bag is a good value, but it is not for professionals. Fortunately, the price reflects this practicality.

Outslayer Double End Bag

best double end bags

Source: Outslayer.com

Aside from the really cool name, the design of the Outslayer bag is also really interesting. This is a hybrid bag that combined parts of the Mexican double end bag and heavy bag styles. The dimensions on this one are 10” x 10” x 20”, so it is pretty large.

Again, the bigger bags are good for practicing heavier strikes and reaction times, so you might look at this bag and wonder if it’s right for you.

The bag weighs 20lbs out of the packaging since it comes pre-stuffed with fabric. You can remove some of this cloth to lighten the load if you want it to rebound a bit faster.

The large size does not mean you can’t use it for speed work and reflex training as long as you are willing to adjust the tension on the line and the amount of weight in the bag.

Like most other Outslayer bags, this one is made of top quality leather, and the straps are made of reinforced nylon.

The bag is built to be sturdy, and the company is not afraid to put their own name behind this product.

Criteria Used to Determine The Top Double Ended Bags

There are many things that you have to consider when ranking the best double end bags on the market today. We took this job seriously, and we have worked to identify five major criteria that are the major factors in ranging the best bags. These criteria include:

  • Material used: The material has to be able to withstand a beating while not being too rough to punch.
  • Quality of Stitching: Stitching allows the bag to stay together. Triple stitching is common in the best bags as this ensures longevity.
  • Quality & Type of Bladder: A high quality bladder will not allow air to seep out and can add cushioning to the bag.
  • Size of the Speed Bag: The bag should be on the smaller side for speed training or large sized for heavier hits. The best bags are those that sell multiple sizes.
  • Quality & Type of Cord: Many different materials can be used to create a powerful yet flexible cord. The material will vary, but the ability to stay flexible over a long period of time will stay the same.

We used each of these five criteria to establish the best quality double end bags, and our collection embodies the very best of these traits.

Benefits of Using A Double End Bag

When considering a double end bag, you have to know what kind of training you are expecting to get out of it. That is why we considered each bag in light of its ability to perform the following tasks.

  • Develop Punch Accuracy & Speed: Each of the bags has to be able to work in a manner that teaches you to punch accurately and counter swiftly.
  • Improves Your Footwork & Movement: Footwork and movement come as a result of having to dodge and counter the swiftly moving bag.
  • Effective Work Out Routine: The workout routine does not come from the bag itself, but it should be able to contribute to the workout. Basically, you should be able to use the bag for a routine.
  • Instill Muscle Memory: Muscle memory comes from repeated, swift movement. The best double end bags rebound at the pace that you need to train and do not waver once they have been struck.

Double End Bag FAQ’s

What’s the Difference Between a Double End bag and a Heavy bag?

Whilst both are fantastic pieces of equipment for a fighter to have in their locker, the two bags allow you to train slightly different areas. Double end bags are for training footwork, speed timing and accuracy. Where as heavy bags are for developing explosive power and can even be used to throw kicks if needed.

Should I Have My Double End Bag Loose or Tight?

It’s really down to personal preference. If it’s your first time using a double end bag I would recommend starting with the tension fairly tight. This way the bag will move around a lot less and allow you to familiarize yourself with the movement of the bag once it’s been struck. As you get used to using a double end bag and are able to land more combos, begin to loosen the tension, as this will force you to keep your hands up and moving.

Having a loose double end bag will also help to simulate fighting opponents that are somewhat awkward and do not striking in a familiar style. Basically, change it up when you’re getting bored of your current tension, as this will allow you to practice striking and moving against different speeds.

Feel free to check out this guide on how to set up a double end bag for some more tips.

Double End VS Speed Bags: What’s the difference?

Both are a great piece of equipment to have for any fighter, although the usefulness of a speed bag is somewhat of a debate between boxing enthusiasts. As I mentioned earlier, double end bags help develop timing, speed and accuracy. Speed bags are designed to work on your rhythm and shoulder endurance.

If it were me, I would get a double end bag first as this allows you to develop more areas of your game.

What Size Double End Bag Should I Get?

If you’re a beginner, start on a larger sized double end bag, or even a Mexican style double end bag as this will allow you to throw a variety of strikes.

Once you get more comfortable with the larger bag, begin to work your way down the sizes until you get to the smaller, lighter models that will provide a faster recoil. This in turn will continue to develop your timing and reflexes, which are of course, an invaluable skill for a fighter.

What’s Inside a Double End Bag?

The filling of a double end bag will be determined by the brand that makes them. Typically, the bag will feature a bladder that will be filled with air. The downside to this is that if the bladder is low quality, air can begin to leak out, causing the bag to deflate. Some companies opt to use cloth inside their bags, however this is much less common, but means the bag won’t deflate.

Do I Need to Wear Gloves with a Double End Bag?

This is another one that’s down to personal preference. Some people are taught to start bear handed, then with wraps, then with gloves.

If you’re going to be competing, I would recommend using the double end bag with gloves, as at the end of the day, you’re going to be fighting with gloves on, not bare handed.

That’s my personal opinion, but it’s really down to you. If you’re hands hurt when using the bag without gloves, start using wraps or even get yourself a nice new pair of gloves.
